Connecticut Submarine Century StoryCorps will be launched this spring in Groton Public Schools in honor of those who have served on and supported our Submarine Force in Connecticut. The interview session is the heart of StoryCorps,, with a focus on collecting, sharing, and preserving people’s stories; their extraordinary work and contributions to our state, nation, and world; especially for those who served on subs, built subs, or supported submariners! GPS students will learn to do the interviews and host a StoryCorps booth at CTSUBCEN STEMFEST on May 11th at Westside Middle School.

CAPT Raymond Woolrich is a US Navy submarine commander who retired in the New London area after 27 years of active service. He served on six submarines, including command of the USS Trepang (SSN 674) out of New London. Since retirement, Captain Woolrich has served as senior submarine technical advisor to the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory on Subase New London for almost twenty years. CAPT Woolrich’s talk will define submarine medicine; what medical issues might be of concern to submariners in their daily life under the sea; what medical issues are of concern to Submarine Force leaders; the history of the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory (NSMRL) and the role NSMRL’s research has played for submariner health and well-being over the years.

Groton Little league holds its opening day each year at Washington Park. With a large population of players and coaches coming from Navy families, we have a strong connection with the Navy. We always invite an official from the Subbase to speak and/or throw out the first pitch. This year will be Captain Whitescarver or Master Chief Clark. The Silver Dolphins will also lead the way. We feel that with the connection of baseball being America’s game and the security that the Navy provides for us, we should honor the men, women and families of the Navy at Groton Little League Opening Day 2016.

Base Realignment and Closure, is the congressionally authorized process the Department of Defense has used to reorganize its base structure to more efficiently and effectively support our forces, increase operational readiness and facilitate new ways of doing business.  Our panelists will take a look back to 2005 when Naval Submarine Base New London was threatened with closure and examine how the lessons learned have improved the base’s position for future BRAC rounds.

Panelists include Congressman Joe Courtney,  U.S. Representative for Connecticut’s 2nd congressional district since 2007; Robert R. “Rob” Simmons, current First Selectman of Stonington and Connecticut’s 2nd District Congressman from 2001-2007; Robert T. Ross, Executive Director of the Connecticut Office of Military Affairs; Tony Sheridan, President and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut; and Mark R. Oefinger, Town Manager, Town of Groton.  The panel will be moderated by Ray Hackett.

SUBVETS Groton will observe the 52nd Anniversary of USSVI which originated here in Groton. This annual event, which takes place on the grounds of the US SUBVETS WWII National Memorial East, is a moving remembrance of those submarines and submariners lost at sea. The event will feature a keynote speaker and a tolling of the boats. During the Tolling the Boats, also known as the Two Bell Ceremony, each individual submarine is recognized and their fallen crewmen are honored by the dipping of the Boat’s Flag and two rings of a Ship’s Bell.

Lisa Lahti, wife of the past commanding officer of Naval Submarine Base New London, and Kathleen O’Beirne, former director of the Navy Family Service Center and wife of a former commanding officer of Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia, will talk about the issues faced by military spouses and how those challenges have changed (and how much progress has been made) from 1960 to the present.

Rear Admiral Jeffrey “Jeff” E. Trussler, Commander, Undersea Warfighting Development Center will present “The Future of the Submarine Force and Submarine Warfare” on June 1, at 7:00 p.m. at the Academic Building at University of Connecticut, Avery Point.

Rear Admiral Trussler oversees the training, assessment, tactical development and analysis of U.S. Navy Undersea Warfare Capabilities.  He is originally from Miami, Oklahoma. After receiving a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy at Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island.

During his naval career, Rear Admiral Trussler has served ashore in various assignments including on the Pacific Fleet Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board, and on the Joint and Navy Staffs. At sea he has served on four submarines and commanded USS MARYLAND (Blue) and Task Force 69 for the U.S. 6th Fleet.  Admiral Trussler was the recipient of the Naval Submarine League’s Rear Adm. Jack Darby Award for Inspirational Leadership and Excellence in Command for 2006.  A member of the Cherokee Nation, he was the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) Executive Excellence award winner for 2008.


Groton Rotary Club’s Second Annual Golf Tournament

The Groton Rotary Club has announced that it will conduct its annual golf tournament on Friday, June 3, at the Shennecossett Golf Course, a historic Donald Ross designed 18-hole course in Groton. The Rotary is proud to dedicate the tourney to the 100th year celebration of Groton as the Submarine Capital of the World.
Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the club’s youth scholars and community grants program.
The Groton Rotary Club is proud to introduce a special new sponsor category – the Military Sponsorship. This is a special opportunity for area businesses to help Rotary honor our community’s active servicemen and veterans.
The $500 cost will cover the greens fees for four (4) military service personnel. The sponsoring business will be recognized by a tee sign and in the program. The Groton Rotary Club will recruit the military four-somes from the U.S. Naval Submarine Base and from within the community.
The tournament is open to the entire community. The cost is $125 per player and $100 for players who are members of the Shennecossett Golf Club. The fee includes 18 holes of golf, a golf cart, lunch, dinner and awards.
Registration and lunch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. The tournament will start with a shotgun tee off at 12:30 p.m.
The Groton Rotary Club is seeking both corporate and hole sponsors. Corporate sponsorships are priced at $1,000 and include a banner with the company’s logo, program recognition and a foursome. Hole sponsorships are $100 and include signage with the company’s logo.
There will be prizes for low gross score and the top three (3) low net scores. There will be raffles at all three Par 3 holes.
All players and sponsorship checks should be made out to the Groton Rotary Club and mailed to John Silsby, 74 Sharon Road, Mystic, CT 06355.

The Connecticut Submarine Lecture Series continues with Tom Plante, EB’s Director of Strategic Planning. He will explain how Electric Boat was established and trace its growth during two world wars. The story of the development of the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine and subsequent submarine classes will be recounted. In 2014, the U.S. Navy awarded Electric Boat a $17.6 billion contract for the construction of 10 additional Virginia-class submarines, the largest contract ever given by the Navy. Join us to hear another chapter in the story of how Groton became the “submarine capital of the world.”

The annual Fourth of July Parade, sponsored by the Town of Groton, is scheduled for Friday, July 4, 2014 at 10 a.m.  This year’s theme is “American Heroes” and the Parade Committee welcomes merchants, businesses of all kinds, non-profit community organizations, marching groups, and bands.  This year, in celebration of Connecticut’s Submarine Century, the parade will feature a Grand Marshal who is a submarine veteran from World War II and the 20 replica submarines that have been decorated for the CT Sub Trail will make their public debut!  We’ll also have many other submarine-related units in the parade including the Commanding Officer of the Subase, the Subase Fire Department, the Silver Dolphins precision drill team, Sub School sailors carrying the lost boat flags for each submarine lost at sea, a Subase Security Boat, US Sub Vets, and more.

Participants should register on-line at www.grotonrec.com/july4th.asp no later than Friday, June 10, 2016.  Don’t forget to include a short biography for your marching unit to be used by the announcer on the viewing stand.  The parade travels along Route 1 from Poquonnock Plains Park to the Groton Shopping Center at Drozdyk Drive.  The reviewing stand is at the Chelsea Groton Bank.
